Thandiwe is a bold, front-on portrait set against a field of unbroken yellow. Long dark braids fall to either side of the face and past the shoulders, each one flecked with short marks of blue, red, lilac and white that catch the eye as they travel down the picture. The face itself is assembled from blocks and strokes of cobalt, crimson, powder blue, lilac and rose, with a clear red mouth and a small string of pale beads at the throat.
What holds the picture together is the contrast between the flat, singing yellow ground and the busy, faceted handling of the face. The features are drawn firmly — the eyes and brows are unambiguous — but the modelling is done entirely through colour rather than shading, warm reds pressed up against cool blues so that the face reads as solid even though almost none of it is painted in a natural skin tone. It is a confident piece of colour-led portraiture.
At 17 × 24 cm on 230gsm premium poster paper, Thandiwe is a small print with real presence. The strong yellow makes it an effective accent in a neutral room, and it pairs well with the other African Portraits in a grouped hang.

Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her portrait work she builds the face from bold, singing colour, letting warm and cool tones play against one another so that character and presence carry the picture rather than a literal likeness. The result is work that brings warmth, personality and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
