Wisdom is the most restrained portrait in the collection, and the most closely toned. The whole picture is pitched in warm earth colours — a deep terracotta ground, a face modelled in ochre, rust and rose — so that the figure emerges from the background rather than sitting sharply in front of it. Braids in navy, black and mint green fall to either side in long ruled strokes, and small white star-like flowers are scattered across the brow, the cheeks and the chin. A thin band of gold marks the throat.
Because the range of colour is narrow, the small decisions carry the picture: the cool mint and navy of the braids against the surrounding warmth, the white flowers picking out points across the face, the gaze held slightly to one side. The handling is smoother and more even here than in the beaded portraits, with the marks in the hair laid down in patient, repeated strokes. The effect is calm and contemplative, and quite different in temper from the brighter pieces in the series.
