Noxolo
Fine Art Print on 230gsm Premium Poster Paper
17 × 24 cm image on an A4 sheet
R650
Noxolo is the warmest and most companionable portrait in the collection. She is turned three-quarters towards the viewer, head slightly inclined, with a half-formed smile at the mouth and a direct, easy gaze. Her dark hair is bound with a pale beaded headband in soft blues and greens, and a long strand of the same beads falls past her ear. Across her shoulders hang several ropes of beadwork in yellow, green, blue and cream. The ground behind her is a full, golden yellow.
The face is where the picture comes alive. It is modelled in deep red-brown and then dappled all over with small touches of red, green, yellow, blue and cream, so that the skin seems to hold reflected colour from everything around it. Unlike the flatter, more graphic portraits in the series, the underlying drawing here is soft and rounded, and the light falls consistently across the brow and cheek, which gives the picture its gentleness. The beadwork, painted in short curved strokes, supplies texture without overwhelming the face.
Printed at 17 × 24 cm on 230gsm premium poster paper, Noxolo is an inviting, good-natured print. The golden ground makes it a natural choice for a room that wants warmth, and it hangs well beside the other yellow-ground pieces in the collection.

Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her portrait work she builds the face from bold, singing colour, letting warm and cool tones play against one another so that character and presence carry the picture rather than a literal likeness. The result is work that brings warmth, personality and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
