Amandla
Fine Art Print on 230gsm Premium Poster Paper
17 × 24 cm image on an A4 sheet
R650
Amandla is the deepest-toned and most sumptuous portrait in the collection. The sitter is painted in rich, dark browns and near-blacks, lifted by touches of lilac, teal, olive and rose across the cheekbones, brow and jaw, so that the face is modelled almost entirely by coloured light rather than by shading. He wears a dark beaded cap with a pale blue-grey dome and a fringed band of scarlet across the forehead, a red beaded necklace at the throat, and a boldly patterned red garment worked in loose squares across the shoulders.
Behind him the ground is not flat but patterned — broad organic shapes in pink, gold, olive and grey-green that curve around the head and give the whole picture a decorative, tapestry-like quality. The scarlet of the headband, necklace and garment threads the composition together from top to bottom, while the darkness of the skin holds the centre and keeps all that surrounding colour in order. The expression is composed and faintly amused, and the picture carries genuine poise.
At 17 × 24 cm on 230gsm premium poster paper, Amandla is the most richly coloured print in the collection. It suits a warm interior and holds attention well as a single piece above a console, desk or bedside table.

Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her portrait work she builds the face from bold, singing colour, letting warm and cool tones play against one another so that character and presence carry the picture rather than a literal likeness. The result is work that brings warmth, personality and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
