Description

The Roots of my Subconscious

Acrylic on Stretched Canvas
122 × 154 cm
R33 000

The Roots of my Subconscious is a large and richly layered floral in which flowers seem to grow across the entire canvas. Delicate magnolia, iris and wild blooms rise on slender stems in the upper half — reds, corals, lilacs, soft blues and cream against a warm peach and pearl-grey sky — while the lower half thickens into a dense, planted border. Deep green tropical leaves, including monstera and palm, anchor the composition and give the flowers something to push up from.

There is a real sense of depth and abundance here. Julie Tugwell layers translucent, blended passages in the background against firmer, more sculptural strokes in the foreground flowers, so the eye travels from airy, distant blooms down into a crowded, jewel-toned garden bed. Warm coral grounds set off cool blues and greens throughout, and the interplay of complementary colour keeps the whole surface alive with movement and light.

At 122 × 154 cm this is a substantial, portrait-format statement piece designed to command a wall. The Roots of my Subconscious brings colour, energy and a sense of flourishing life to a large space, holding its own in a double-volume room, a stairwell, or a generous reception or dining area, and pairing well with both pared-back and richly decorated interiors.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her floral work she leans into bold, singing colour, building petals and leaves with confident, loaded strokes of the knife and brush. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of flowers rather than a botanical likeness, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
