Fikile is a close, calm portrait of a young woman looking directly out of the picture. A deep indigo headwrap, marked with strokes of olive and sage, frames her face and falls in soft folds to either side. Her features are modelled in warm red-brown and then broken open with dabs of lilac, powder blue, coral and gold, so that light appears to move across her skin. Long strands of beadwork in red, yellow, blue and white hang from a banded headpiece and gather across her chest.
The colour does the work here. A quiet green ground holds the figure still while the headwrap and beads supply rhythm and movement, the small round touches of paint building a steady beat across the lower half of the picture. Warm skin tones are set against cool blues and greens so that the two spark against one another, an approach that echoes the expressive, colour-led handling running through Julie Tugwell’s portrait work.
