African Kadinsky is the most graphic portrait in the collection. A field of vivid red fills the picture, and against it the sitter’s hair sweeps up and outwards in strong black-and-white stripes that frame the face like a headdress. The face is painted in blues, turquoise and green, scattered with small confetti-like dabs of pink, yellow and red, with a firm crimson mouth and a gold spiral earring at the left ear. Below, a dense collar of beadwork in gold, black, red and green hangs in heavy loops across the shoulders.
The picture works through opposition. The flat red ground pushes hard against the cool blue-green of the skin, while the crisp black-and-white striping of the hair supplies a third, graphic note that stops the two colours from simply cancelling one another out. The beadwork is built from hundreds of small, loaded touches, giving the lower half of the picture a dense, tactile weight against the flatness above. It is a strong, decorative composition, and the boldest use of pattern in the series.
