Nobomi
Fine Art Print on 230gsm Premium Poster Paper
17 × 24 cm image on an A4 sheet
R650
Nobomi is one of four portraits in the collection worked on a clean white ground, and the change of approach is immediately visible. Rather than a painted field of colour behind the head, the figure sits alone on white, so that every mark counts. The face is covered over entirely in blue, green, yellow and lilac, and then inscribed with small motifs — crosses, zigzags, dots, short dashes and a single small heart on the brow. A chequered headband in red, green, yellow, black and white runs across the crown, and yellow flower-shaped earrings hang at either side.
The surface is built from dense, dry, granular strokes that let the texture of the support show through, giving the skin a soft, worked quality quite unlike the flatter passages of the canvas portraits. Beneath all the pattern the drawing is careful and assured: the eyes are clearly observed, the mouth is warm and specific, and the head sits properly on the neck. It is a picture that rewards close looking, with new small marks appearing each time.
Printed at 17 × 24 cm on 230gsm premium poster paper, Nobomi is best hung where it can be seen from close to. The white ground gives it plenty of air, and it frames particularly cleanly with a simple white mount.

Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her portrait work she builds the face from bold, singing colour, letting warm and cool tones play against one another so that character and presence carry the picture rather than a literal likeness. The result is work that brings warmth, personality and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
