Makia wears a long headcloth striped in blue, red, yellow and green that falls well past the shoulders. Description

Makia

Fine Art Print on 230gsm Premium Poster Paper
17 × 24 cm image on an A4 sheet
R650

Makia is a richly worked portrait on a white ground, and the largest presence among the drawn pieces in the collection. A long headcloth, striped and patterned in blue, red, yellow and green, covers the head and falls in heavy folds well past the shoulders on both sides, filling most of the picture. Within that frame the face is warm — ochre, rose and burnt orange — and marked all over with drawn symbols: a sunburst across the brow, stacked triangles, small hearts, a star at the collarbone, rows of short dashes beneath the eyes and along the jaw.

The picture balances a lot of activity. The headcloth is worked in long parallel strokes that give it direction and weight, while the face is treated in small, close marks, so the two areas differ in touch as well as in colour. Cool blues in the cloth are set against the warm ochres and reds of the skin, and the eyes — carefully drawn, dark and level — hold the centre steady. The white ground is left open at the edges, letting the whole figure breathe.

At 17 × 24 cm on 230gsm premium poster paper, Makia holds a good deal of detail and is best placed where it can be seen from close range. It is one of the warmest prints in the collection and hangs well on its own.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her portrait work she builds the face from bold, singing colour, letting warm and cool tones play against one another so that character and presence carry the picture rather than a literal likeness. The result is work that brings warmth, personality and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
