About the artist
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African painter working from Knysna on the Garden Route. Born and raised in Pretoria, she grew up surrounded by the arts — dancing at PACT, the Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal, and attending ballet and theatre from a young age. That early grounding in rhythm and movement still shapes the way she paints.
Her work spans expressive abstraction, florals, landscapes, figures and portraits, most often in acrylic or oil on stretched and unstretched canvas. Colour leads: layered, saturated and applied with visible gesture, built up and worked back until the surface carries as much movement as image.
The works selected here are her largest available paintings, several of them over 1,3 metres in both directions — scaled for private collections, designed interiors, hotels, lodges and corporate spaces. The full catalogue of smaller originals and fine art prints is available on request.
Artist statement
“I didn’t choose art, art chose me.”
Julie works intuitively rather than to a plan. A painting begins in colour and movement, is built up in layers, and is worked through the resistance rather than around it.
“Play, experiment — move through the resistance.”
“I am a seeker. I paint to know who I am.”
